LOCATION
We're in the heart of Australia's outback, a short twenty minute drive East down the Landsborough Highway from the town of Winton in central Queensland. Winton is about 1,400 km from Brisbane, the nearest capital city, and 180 km from Longreach, the closest airport.
The museum site is on top of a magnificent Jump-Up. Jump-up is the local name for the type of mesa plateau that occurs in the area. Our own mesa measures 2 x 5 km and is a fascinating and beautiful destination in itself.
The surrounding area is known geologically as the Winton Formation, a Cretaceous-age landscape that dates back about 100 million years. This is where most of our fossils come from, so when you visit you'll be walking on the same ground that the mighty dinosaurs once did!

Do I need a four-wheel drive vehicle?
No, however the museum site is 11 km from the main road (the Matilda Highway) up an unsealed gravel road.
